Our students at NDEC - Lawrence hail from many parts of the globe, bringing together a wonderful mix of culture, language, tradition, and aspiration.
Adult literacy and the development of self-esteem provide students with the life skills that support family growth, employment opportunities and community participation.
The students want to better their lives by becoming citizens, getting a drivers license, buying a house, or getting a new job, but they don’t always know where to begin. We show them how to take manageable steps toward creating the life they want in this country.
The Notre Dame Education Center-Lawrence (NDEC) is a community of learning where low-income adults are empowered to improve and enrich their lives and the lives of their families in an environment that is welcoming, respectful and dignified. Through access to quality direct services, collaboration and advocacy for positive change, NDEC provides goal-oriented education, skills training, language and literacy development, enrichment opportunities and support services. NDEC assists and supports adult learners to achieve their next steps and reach their full potential as productive, contributing workers in the community and in society.

In addition to our very dedicated staff Notre Dame Education Center, we are fortunate to have many wonderful volunteers. We appreciate their desire to partner with us in furthering our Mission. Through the generosity of our volunteers it is possible for an adult learner to achieve his/her educational goals because they are given the opportunity for tutoring and other assistance.
Offering their time and experience, volunteers tutor those learning English, preparing for citizenship and gaining skills to be able to work. Mike, one of our evening volunteers believes, "Gifts are special things there for the asking; other times they are just given to us. I have been gifted with an excellent education and can think of nothing better than to share this with NDEC students who can benefit from help through volunteering." A day volunteer, Jean expresses, "Volunteering to tutor adults learning is fun and rewarding. Working with students struggling in an English class, you realize how much they appreciate the individual help and attention. The same is true for those preparing for their citizenship interview and test."
We are very grateful for the many talents our loyal volunteers bring, as well as the stories they share about how much they enjoy their time with us and receive as much as they give. If you would like to explore ways you might volunteer your time, please contact Sr. Mary Elizabeth Whalen, SNDdeN, Coordinator of Volunteers at 978.682.6441 X 15 or email@example.com.
